Preparation
We are all about bringing creative and collaborative improvisers together to entertain, build, and connect with our community. For this audition, we are interested in people who have either taken improv courses or have performed in the past. We also seek people who value openness, playfulness, and a willingness to support their scene partner.
We are looking for people who are interested in exploring different types of improv. We do long-form and short-form improv. We have shows that are for families and shows that are for a more mature audience.
Here are some tips that can help you at our auditions:
Dress comfortably. Wear something you can move in easily. This is improv so none of us knows what is going to happen so be ready to move as you can.
Arrive with an open mind. The best improv moments can come when you are open to whatever comes your way. Take advantage of the unexpected.
Our auditions are about collaboration and not competition. We find it more powerful to support and lift each other up.
Be ready for fun. The audition is a time to let loose and have a good time. Everyone in the room is there to support you.
Build connections. We appreciate comedy that brings people together rather than puts others down, especially those from marginalized communities. Aim to create laughs that bring the audience into the scene rather than pushes them away.
What to Expect
Our auditions are organized as group sessions, designed to be low-pressure, fun, and welcoming. Here is a quick look at what will happen:
Warm-up Games. We will start with some group warm-up games to help everyone get comfortable with each other and get energized for an amazing audition.
Basic Improv Scenes. After warming up, we will start with some basic improv scenes. These are quick, game-based scenes to showcase your creativity, timing, and ability to interact with others.
Group Scene Work. In this section, we will have people perform in small groups. This approach provides you a chance to show us character skills, listening abilities, and willingness to go where the scene takes you.
Wrap-Up. We thank you for coming and explain the rest of the process. We are not looking for perfection. We are looking for enthusiasm, a supportive attitude, creativity, and fun.
Stand Out
Be yourself. Let your personality shine through. Do not worry about forcing funny moments. We appreciate your authenticity.
Support your scene partners. Make everyone look good. Offer your ideas and support other people's ideas. Be attention and build on your partner's ideas. Scenes are co-created so remember to not steamroll your partners.
Be present. Our lives are complicated and there are so many different things that can distract us. Stay in the moment, focus on what is happening, and do not get lost in your own mind.
Bring your energy. Show us your passion for the stage and for co-creating stories.
After the Audition
If you are selected to join the Blue Door Theatre, you will go through our 4-week boot camp to get you prepared to be a member of the theatre. Our improvisers participate in weekly practices, shows, workshops, and more. You will have plenty of opportunities to grow, learn, share your expertise, and connect with a supportive group of performers. If you are not selected, do not give up. We encourage you to refine your skills and audition again in the future.
You may be nervous, but we want you to remember, we are rooting for you. We cannot wait to see what you bring to the stage. Come as you are, have fun, and we will co-create something amazing together.
